<p>Provides advanced permalink options that allow you to:</p>

<li>Have multiple permalink structures.  Permalinks can be assigned to posts or ranges of posts</li>
<li>301 redirect old permalink structures (many structures are allowed)</li>
<li>Category-specific permalinks.  Posts in certain categories can be assigned a permalink structure</li>

<p>All permalinks are real permalinks and do not result in 301 redirections.  <em>This means you can change your permalink structure without<br />
affecting any existing posts and without losing any page rank.</em>  Any attempts to access posts in the wrong permalink structure will be<br />
automatically redirected to the correct URL.</p>

<h4>Example 1: Migrating a permalink structure</h4>
<p>Say you have an existing site with the default WordPress permalink structure <code>/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/</code> and you decide you want to change it<br />
to a more keyword-heavy <code>/%category%/%postname%/</code>.  If you change the permalink setting then all your old posts will be moved, and you will suffer a major loss<br />
of page rank (not to mention a lot of 404s).  With Advanced Permalinks you can define a specific permalink structure for all your old<br />
posts and then create a new permalink structure for new ones.  All your old posts will carry on living at the same URL as before, but all<br />
new posts will be created using your new structure.</p>
<h4>Example 2: Category-specific permalinks</h4>
<p>Sometimes you want posts in a certain category to appear elsewhere on your site.  For example, your usual permalink structure may result in:</p>
<p>/2007/05/02/my-review</p>
<p>However, you want posts in the ‘review’ category to appear as:</p>
<p>/reviews/my-review</p>
<p>Using Advanced Permalinks this is not a problem.</p>

Allows multiple permalink structures and category-specific permalinks without needing redirects.

<p>Backwards Compatible Permalinks helps prevent 404 errors when switching between permalink structures.</p>
<p>It achieves this by appending a set of backwards compatible post rewrite rules. This ensures posts are still accessible at their previous permalink after the permalink structure is updated.</p>
<h4>Example</h4>
<p>Let’s say your permalink structure is set to “Month and name” and you have a post titled “I Love WordPress.” That particular post would live at <code>https://example.com/2019/03/i-love-wordpress/</code>.</p>
<p>But what if you wanted to switch to the “Post name” permalink structure and have your post live at <code>https://example.com/i-love-wordpress/</code> instead?</p>
<p>You could but this would result in the existing post permalink 404ing when visited. Which is problematic if the previous URL was bookmarked or shared on social media.</p>
<p>With Backwards Compatible Permalinks installed your post would be accessible at both the old and new permalink structures:</p>

<li><code>https://example.com/2019/03/i-love-wordpress/</code></li>
<li><code>https://example.com/i-love-wordpress/</code></li>
</ul>
<h4>Caveats</h4>
<ul>
<li>This plugin does not work retroactively. i.e. you must have the plugin installed and activated prior to switching permalink structures before backwards compatibility will work.</li>
<li>Currently only standard posts are supported.</li>
<li>Backwards compatibility is not supported between certain permalink structure updates. This is due to a clash between permalink structure regex matching.</li>
<li>Backwards compatibility is only provided between the most recent permalink structure update. i.e. you cannot change your permalink structure 3 times and have backwards compatibility across all 3 structures.</li>
</ul>
<h4>Deactivate or uninstall</h4>
<p>After deactivating or uninstalling this plugin please ensure you visit Settings > Permalinks in the WordPress admin area to flush your rewrite rules.</p>
