When working on WordPress themes, we tend to use a lot of custom post types. This gives the end- user custom little sections to manage content in. Often enough we see the need to be able to feature posts or custom posts of custom post types (cpts).
This can be accomplished by using a bunch of different Featured Posts Plugins. And we probably have used all of them over the years. To date we have yet to find one that didn’t conflict or break somehting in our WordPress themes. So we created our own, to be specifc we created our own to be easily used with Posts, Custom Posts, and with the Simple Page ordering plugin that we install on every WordPress Theme that we develop.
To use:
<ol>
<li>Download the feature-posts-and-custom-posts.zip file to your computer.</li>
<li>Unzip the file.</li>
<li>Upload the feature-posts-and-custom-posts folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory.</li>
<li>Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu in WordPress.</li>
<li>In your theme and in the template you need the featured functionality uses a custom query like this query_posts("post_type=professionals&posts_per_page=-1&meta_key=_jsFeaturedPost&meta_value=yes"); to grad all of the featured posts.</li>

Allows the user to feature posts and custom posts. When a post is featured it gets the post metta _jsFeaturedPost.

Follow these steps to get your seed exchange website up and running quickly:

<li>Install WordPress on your website, if you haven’t already. (You can use <a href="https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Famous_5-Minute_Install" rel="nofollow ugc">WordPress’s Famous 5-Minute Install instructions</a>.)</li>
<li>Install the WP-Seedbank plugin. (You can use <a href="https://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins#Installing_Plugins" rel="nofollow ugc">WordPress’s Automatic Plugin Installation</a> instructions, or the WordPress Beginner “<a href="http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/step-by-step-guide-to-install-a-wordpress-plugin-for-beginners/" rel="nofollow ugc">Step by Step Guide to Install a WordPress Plugin for Beginners</a>” instructions.)</li>
<li>Enable user registration from your <a href="https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_General_Screen" rel="nofollow ugc">WordPress General Settings screen</a> by checking the box that reads “Anyone can register.” This allows the people in your community to make user accounts on your website and use the WP-Seedbank software.
<ol>
<li>Set New User Default Role to Contributor. This enables the people in your community who have made user accounts to create seed exchange posts and submit them for your review to publish.</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Share the Web address (URL) of your website with your community and invite them to join.</li>
<li>Periodically check your website for seed exchange posts created by members of your community, review, and publish them. (The same process that you use for <a href="https://codex.wordpress.org/Writing_Posts" rel="nofollow ugc">reviewing and publishing regular posts applies here</a>.)</li>
<li>Optionally, you can promote members of your community who have created seed exchange posts in the past to the Author role, so that they no longer need your approval to publish seed exchange posts.
