<p>KIA subtitle allows you to add a subtitle to your posts and retrieve it in the loop in the same manner as the post title. By using the Subtitle block or the <code>the_subtitle()</code> or <code>get_the_subtitle() template tags</code>.</p>
<p>It adds an input field right under the title field of posts, pages and any custom post type.  It also add a subtitle column to the edit screen as well as to the quick edit.</p>
<p>You can also use the Subtitle block or the shortcode <code>[the-subtitle]</code> to display it within the post content.</p>
<h3>Site Editor</h3>
<p>The plugin provides a Subtitle block in the editor. In the post editor, this doesn’t make a lot of sense, but mimics the core Title block. The ideal use case for the Subtitle block is when editing your theme</p>
<ol>
<li>Click Edit Site in the WordPress toolbar</li>
<li>Select the template you wish to edit, commonly this might be called Single Post, or Singular.</li>
<li>Insert the Subtitle block where needed, commonly right after the Title block.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Template Tags</h3>
<p>This plugin does <em>not</em> attempt to output the subtitle. With an infinite number of themes, it is not possible for us to support that. The onus is on the user to customize their theme accordingly. The plugin provides two template tags that can be used to customize your theme as desired.</p>
<h4>`the_subtitle( string $before</h4>
<p>”, string $after = ”, bool $display = true ): void|string` =</p>
<p>Displays or retrieves the current post subtitle with optional markup.</p>

Markup to prepend to the title.

$display `bool` `optional`
Whether to echo or return the title. Default true for echo.

<h4>WooCommerce support</h4>
<p>There is a small <a href="https://github.com/helgatheviking/kia-subtitle-woocommerce-bridge" rel="nofollow ugc">bridge plugin</a> you can install and activate to automatically display the subtitle in most WooCommerce locations. This will work for all themes that are using WooCommerce’s default hooks.</p>
<p><em>NB:</em> It’s known that the Ocean WP theme has it’s own hooks in the WooCommerce templates. You will need to alter the bridge plugin… please take a look at this <a href="https://wordpress.org/support/topic/compatibility-with-latest-wp-and-wc/#post-15456180" rel="ugc">support thread</a>.</p>
<h4>WPML Ready</h4>
<p>KIA Subtitle has been tested by WPML and will allow you to translate the subtitle on multilingual sites.</p>

<p>The WP Subtitle plugin allows your pages and posts to contain a subtitle.  Also called a sub-heading, this this short line of text is meant to appear beneath a post’s (or page’s) title, but can be inserted in your template wherever you choose.</p>
<p>The subtitle can be inserted into your theme template files (or plugin) using the following API:</p>
<h4>Display The Subtitle</h4>
<p>All parameters are optional. If ‘post_id’ is omitted then the current post ID in the loop is used.</p>

<p>The array of arguments accepted for the <code>plugins/wp_subtitle/the_subtitle</code> action and <code>plugins/wp_subtitle/get_subtitle</code> filter are:</p>
<p><strong>before</strong><br />
<em>(string)</em> Text to place before the subtitle if one exists. Defaults to an empty string.</p>
<p><strong>after</strong><br />
<em>(string)</em> Text to place after the subtitle if one exists. Defaults to to an empty string.</p>
<p><strong>post_id</strong><br />
<em>(integer)</em> Post, page or custom post type ID.</p>
<p><strong>default_value</strong><br />
<em>(string)</em> Only used by the <code>plugins/wp_subtitle/the_subtitle</code> action, allows you to specify a default subtitle to display if the post does not have one. For the <code>plugins/wp_subtitle/get_subtitle</code> filter the second parameter of <code>apply_filters</code> should be used instead. Defaults to to an empty string.</p>
<h4>Post Type Support</h4>
<p>By default, subtitle are supported by both posts and pages. To add support for custom post types add teh following to your theme functions file or plugin:</p>

<h4>WooCommerce Plugin Support</h4>
<p>Subtitles can automatically be added to your WooCommerce products without needing to make template changes. In the admin go to WooCommerce > Settings > Products where you can choose to:</p>

<li>Enable Product Subtitles</li>
<li>Display the subtitle on single product pages</li>
<li>Display the subtitle on product archives (category pages)</li>
</ul>
<h4>Yoast SEO and SEOPress Plugin Support</h4>
<p>The plugin allows you to include the subtitle in your meta titles and descriptions via the <a href="https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/" rel="ugc">Yoast SEO</a> and <a href="https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-seopress/" rel="ugc">SEOPress</a> plugins.</p>
<p>Similar to the Yoast <code>%%title%%</code> placeholder which inserts the post title, you can use <code>%%wps_subtitle%%</code>.</p>
<p>There are also addition placeholders and filters to allow to to customize seperators for the subtitle.</p>

Development

I found this plugin when developing a theme where I needed to show the subtitle below the title of the page/post/CPT. Now I saw many reviews saying what's the point of this plugin or this is not a plug-n-play plugin etc. and I would like those people to say, trust me, guys, you have no development experience whatsoever, otherwise you would have understood the importance of the plugin and thanked that it is not a plug-n-play plugin which gives you full control over how you wanna show, where you wanna show and styling.

When Gutenberg was in beta it has the subheading block built-in, but then it did not get released. What a shame! Anyways, I initially thought that I will create a custom Gutenberg Block myself for the subheading, but I quickly saw that any block you make will be shown inside the the_content(); section. Which didn't worked for me as I wanted it outside of the content so that I can place it below the title and show where I want it to be shown. Also, you can easily add the subtitle support to your CPT which is truly awesome.

Again, I will highly recommend this plugin and I would have given 10 stars if it was possible. I just hope that the plugin developer maintains the plugin in future and not leave it in the middle as this is truly an amazing plugin which I would hate to see die.
