<p>Media Deduper will find and eliminate duplicate images and attachments from your WordPress media library. After installing, you’ll have a new “Manage Duplicates” option in your Media section.</p>
<p>Before Media Deduper can identify duplicate assets, it will build an index of all the files in your media library, which can take some time. Once that’s done, however, Media Deduper automatically adds new uploads to its index, so you shouldn’t have to generate the index again.</p>

<p>Once up and running, Media Deduper provides you with a “Manage Duplicates” page listing all of your duplicate media files. The list makes it easy to see and delete duplicate files: delete one and its twin will disappear from the list because it’s then no longer a duplicate. Easy! By default, the list is sorted by file size, so you can focus on deleting the files that will free up the most space.</p>

<p>Media Deduper comes with a “Smart Delete” option that prevents a post’s Featured Image from being deleted, even if that image is found to be a duplicate elsewhere on the site.</p>
<p>If a post has a featured image that’s a duplicate file, Smart Delete will re-assign that post’s image to an already-in-use copy of the image before deleting the duplicate so that the post’s appearance is unaffected. This feature only tracks Featured Images, and not images used in galleries, post bodies, shortcodes, meta fields, or anywhere else.</p>

<p>Note that duplicate identification is based on the data of the files themselves, not any titles, captions or other metadata you may have provided in the WordPress admin.</p>
<p>Media Deduper can differentiate between 1.) media items that are duplicates because the media files they link to have the same data and 2.) those that actually point to the same data file, which can happen with a plugin like WP Job Manager or Duplicate Post.</p>

<p>A ‘Download’ option is added to both List and Grid modes in the Media Library.<br />
Choose the attachments you want to export, click the button, and a zip file of those attachments is created that you can then download.</p>
<h4>Selecting for download in List mode</h4>
<p>In List mode the ‘Download’ option appears in the Bulk Actions dropdown. Select the attachments by checking the checkboxes, choose ‘Download’ in the dropdown, then click ‘Apply’.</p>
<h4>Selecting for download in Grid mode</h4>
<p>In Grid mode, first click the ‘Bulk Select’ button. Then click on the attachments you want to download and hit the ‘Download’ button.</p>
<h4>Download options</h4>
<p>Before the zip file is created, you’ll see a) how many files will be downloaded, and b) how big the uncompressed files are.<br />
By default, you are also given the option to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Include or exclude image intermediate sizes.</li>
<li>Include in your download the folder structure you use in your uploads folder (e.g. year/month) or have all files downloaded in a single folder.</li>
</ul>
<p>You can set a maximum (uncompressed) file size to be downloaded in the plugin settings, found in Settings > Media.</p>
<p>By default, zip files are automatically removed in 1 – 2 hours, or you can delete them yourself.</p>
<p>If you want to keep the download files inaccessible to others, you can use the ‘Make downloads secure’ option in Settings > Media.<br />
This creates a .htaccess file in the folder where the download zip files are kept, preventing direct access.</p>
<p>You can also choose to encrypt and password-protect the zip files. However please note that in most cases the standard Windows zip facility<br />
will not be able to open the files – you will need to use something like 7-Zip instead.</p>
<p>However there’s no point in using this feature or the .htaccess one unless you also have some means of preventing direct access to the attachments<br />
themselves in the Uploads folder.</p>
