This plugin adds the site icon option to Settings -> General.
If you disable or do not use the customizer, then you will have trouble updating the site icon. The site icon is used for favicons, and the new oEmbed feature. This plugin makes the site icon editable from the general settings page.
The plugin is a modified version of Jetpack\’s site-icon module.
Note: The plugin does not remove the ability to change the site icon from the customizer. It only adds another way to change the site icon.

Maybe an idea to promote this a bit more? The Customizer becomes more and more irritating, with 4.7 around the corner there's even the added CSS editor. The only useful thing in there is the site icon, so time to dump the entire thing and install your plugin!

Huntsman Dark Mode Site Icon allows you to set a separate site icon for light and dark mode.
Upload one icon for light mode using WordPress’s built-in Site Icon, and upload a separate icon for dark mode using this plugin. The appropriate icon is then displayed automatically based on the visitor’s system theme.
No code or configuration is required. If no dark mode icon is set, WordPress behaves exactly as normal.
