The default is to count the total number of words in all posts. If you would like the number of words displayed for a particular post or page, use the following inside “the loop”

Post Word Count

Counts the total number of words in all posts or the number of words in a single post.

The plugin allows you to temporarily or permanently filter certain words from the 
title, content, excerpt or tags in posts.
You can choose where to search exactly or select everywhere in the posts. The 
original content of posts is kept safe. You can always go back and show the 
original text.
