Migrate Guru – Site Migration & Cloning

I've migrated hundreds of WordPress sites using different methods, from completely manual to plugin-assisted and nothing has been as reliable and easy as MigrateGuru from BlogVault.

There's a reason that hosting companies like WP Engine and Pantheon have migration plugins powered by BlogVault - they are simple to set up and are very reliable.

Yesterday, I had to launch a 3.5 GB site from dev to a live server. We didn't have direct access to the host's control panel; just FTP and WordPress admin access.

I tried two popular backup plugins and neither could get the job done. Then, I slapped my forehead, installed Migrate Guru, and went through the migration wizard. Being a large site, the migration took over an hour but when it was completed, the site worked as intended with no major issues.

As a developer with control issues, I love manually migrating sites and having my hands in each step but MigrateGuru makes it so easy and does it so well with less work that it's now my migration method of choice.

As advertised - easy to use and pretty fast. I tried several other migration type plugins, and they either couldn't handle the large site (4GB of files, according to another backup plugin - that didn't restore to another hosting place), or just didn't work.



But this one - it worked. And took much less time than the attempts with the other plugins.

Wow! It Just Works!


Migrated a site with thousands of ecom products, and worked great, especially with a large media library, etc. Fast and using the migration key is super simple.



I would suggest labeling the migration key as a Destination Key, I have mistakenly put in the key from the source, and that is not good.



I have also had a small issue when the SSL cert is not set up yet and so the cert is invalid, it won't connect; so maybe an option to ignore SSL cert errors would be helpful. Simple to fix, just fix the cert first, and retry, but annoying when I'm already logged in to both sites.

This is the easiest migration plugin I've used. Fast, too.

Needs files-only and database-only options. It looks like I can deselect all the database tables, but is not possible to deselect the folders.

As a website designer and SEO expert who has worked almost exclusively with WordPress-based websites for the past 10+ years, I've used a LOT of different WordPress website migration tools, import/export tools... in fact, I've worked with a crap-load of plugins all-together and can count the number of plugins I've paid for on 1-hand. This always becomes troublesome when migrating websites as the "free" migration tools out there never work for large websites with lots of photos or eCommerce websites with lots of products and pages.



I just tried this plugin for the first time on a client's website that currently has MORE than 1,550 products and not only did it work flawlessly without any errors or warnings, but it completed the migration in UNDER 5 minutes!! I'm still in awe especially considering the setup time also took less than 5 minutes. Actually, if I needed to use it again, I could probably do it in under 1 minute, but the directions are a little hard to understand. One set of instructions says you only need to install the plugin on the site you're migrating from, while another says you need to install the plugin on both sites... then the whole secret key is a bit confusing as it's not even mentioned in most directions I found. So allow me to make it a little easier.



What I found was the fastest way to migrate sites with this tool, was to:




Install & Activate the Migrate Guru plugin on BOTH WEBSITES.



Log into the WordPress admin of the target website.



Click the 'Migrate Guru' link (bottom left-nav) and COPY the 'Migration Key'



Switch over to the WordPress Admin of the original site (the site you want to migrate FROM), and navigate to 'Migrate Guru'.



Enter any working email address in the 'Email Address' field.



Then, check the box and click 'Migrate'.



Select the host of the target website, or if your host is not listed (like my case) select 'Other Hosts'.        NOTE: The next page will look the same for everyone regardless of which host you clicked on.



PASTE your migration key from STEP 3 into the 'MigrateGuru Migration Key' field.



Fill out the necessary fields based on the setup of your target website and click 'Migrate'.      NOTE:  In my case, I only filled out the 'Migration Key' and the 'Server IP' fields (under 'Advanced Options') where I pasted the IP address of my target website's server that I copied from the target site's hosting account.



De-select any server directories and/or database tables that you don't want to migrate from the 'Add Folders' and 'Add Tables' sections.



Click 'Migrate'.




In a few minutes your site should be finished migrating. You'll receive an email to let you know that it's finished.

I've migrated sites manually for years. I use Migrate Guru now. It's excellent. I recommend it. 



I also recommend checking your site after for anything missing. Any additional webroot files you have uploaded (favicons, robots.txt, humans.txt etc.). Any historical data such as Relevannsi search data. Perhaps check the advanced setup for options.
