<p>It’s aesthetically pleasing to link WordPress sites to one’s Mastodon account by adding a link in the site footer menu to one’s Mastodon profile that’s replaced with the “M” mastodon trunk/word balloon-logo.</p>
<p>Without this plugin, however, this functionality is not <a href="https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/57293#ticket" rel="nofollow ugc">expected</a> to work for any Mastodon domains until 6.2, and at that point, only the top-10-by-volume Mastodon domains.</p>
<p>This plugin allows replacing the top-100 (by user) Mastodon domains (as of plugin publication) with the Mastodon logo SVG <a href="https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/twenty-twenty-one/#add-social-icons" rel="ugc">via this mechanism</a>:</p>

<h3>Current Limitations</h3>

<li>Currently only works with <a href="https://wordpress.org/themes/twentytwentyone/" rel="ugc">twenty-twenty-one</a> theme and later</li>
<li>Non-top-100 domains were queried at plugin publishing time (2023-02-18) from <code>instances.social</code>: <code>'https://instances.social/api/1.0/instances/list?count=0&include_closed=true&include_down=false&sort_by=users&sort_order=desc</code></li>
</ol>
<p><a href="https://github.com/ijoseph/mastodon_social_icons" rel="nofollow ugc">I (or anyone else) can work to address these limitations if there is interest.</a></p>

<p>When embedding a post from a fediverse server, the content of the post needs to be fetched from that server, which is then stored in your site’s database. Based on the way you configure the plugin, additional requests will be made periodically to refresh the cached data.</p>
<p>When making requests to a third party server in general, the server will receive and may record the IP address of the server hosting your website. Please consult the privacy details and terms of use of each server you are embedding content from. <p>To build the plugin from source you will need Node.js (v18+) and npm. Run the following commands from the plugin root:</p>

<p>The build process uses Gulp with Browserify and Babel to bundle and minify the JavaScript files located in the src directory, and compiles SCSS to CSS. The compiled output is placed in the dist directory.</p>
