The 404er will make every public page of your blog return a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_404" rel="nofollow ugc">404</a> instead of the normal <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes#2xx_Success" rel="nofollow ugc">200</a>. Yes, you could use the normal <a href="https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Privacy_SubPanel" rel="nofollow ugc">privacy subpanel</a>, but that would be sooo pedestrian.
