Description

This plugin solves two common frustrations with default WordPress user profiles:

  1. Inability to Change Usernames: By default, a username cannot be changed after creation. This plugin adds a simple field for administrators to update any user’s username directly from their profile page.
  2. Reliance on Gravatar: This plugin allows your users to set their own profile picture by selecting an image directly from the WordPress Media Library, giving them more control and overriding the default Gravatar. If no custom avatar is set, a clean placeholder image is used instead.

It’s a lightweight, secure, and easy-to-use solution for enhancing user management on your WordPress site.

Installation

  1. Upload the entire plugin folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
  3. Navigate to ‘Users’ > ‘Your Profile’ to see the new options. Administrators will see the options on other users’ profiles as well.
  4. Important: Make sure you have a placeholder.png image inside an assets folder within your plugin directory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any user change their username?

No. For security reasons, only users with administrator privileges (‘manage_options’ capability) can see the field to change a username.

How do I remove my custom avatar?

When editing your profile, if a custom avatar is active, a checkbox will appear allowing you to remove it and revert to using the default placeholder image.
